What is Jersey Collective?

Jersey Collective is a collection of New Jersey-related projects

Jersey Collective started as an Instagram account in March 2014 but has grown to be much more. Instagram is still a crucial part of what we do: host guests for weekly takeovers on our collaborative account. We’ve had hundreds of people participate from all over the state, each with different things to show us, backgrounds, life experiences, levels of comfort calling themselves a “photographer.” Everyone who has taken over the account has shown us something different, but when considered together, every post from every week has created a collective vision of the state that we’ve built together.

Jersey Collective quickly became more than just an Instagram account by finding ways to bring the project to life off-screen: meet ups, gallery shows, a book published by Rutgers University Press, a sticker vending machine stocked with work by New Jersey artists, a book club, and New Jersey Go Fish!

The project promotes the arts, historic preservation, nature, exploring New Jersey, local businesses, and challenges misconceptions people have about our state.

Jersey Collective has been featured by the Asbury Park Press, New Jersey Monthly, CBS Philly, News 12 NJ, New Jersey is the World, Greetings from the Garden State, and elsewhere.

Some things we’ve done before & would happily do again:

- Curate gallery shows
- Guest judge photography/art/writing contests
- Present for libraries & community groups
- Appear as a podcast guest
- Participate on a panel
- Co-host events
- Collaborate with organizations or brands doing cool, NJ-related things

Who is Jersey Collective?

Jersey Collective was founded by Kerri Sullivan. Kerri, who is from Monmouth County but now lives in North Jersey, is the editor of the anthology New Jersey Fan Club: Artists & Writers Celebrate the Garden State (Rutgers University Press June 2022). Some of her strongest (and strangest) childhood memories take place at The Land of Make Believe. She once spent the day visiting diners on The Munchmobile and was quoted on NJ.com about how much bread she ate.

You can learn more about her on her website, or by following her on Instagram @ksulphoto.

Much of Jersey Collective’s design work is done by Alex Flannery
